Programs
Refuge Ranch provides free, Christ-centered equine-assisted programs and relationship-based support for children, families and community partners throughout Central Illinois.
Some families come to the Ranch for long-term, consistent programming designed to build trust, confidence and healthy relationships over time. Others experience Refuge through school visits, church groups, community organizations, special events and other opportunities offered throughout the year.
At the center of the Ranch’s work are two primary programs:

Bridges Mentoring
Bridges connects children and teens with consistent, caring adult mentors for one-on-one time at the Ranch. Through horses, ranch activities and long-term relationships, participants build trust, confidence and a stronger sense of belonging.

Freedom Reins
Freedom Reins is Refuge Ranch’s adaptive riding program for children and individuals with special needs. Participants work with horses and trained volunteers in a supportive environment designed around their abilities and goals.

Community and Group Opportunities
Refuge Ranch also partners with schools, churches and community organizations throughout the year. Groups may visit the Ranch for field trips, service opportunities, special programs and other experiences that introduce participants to horses, farm life and the mission of Refuge Ranch.
These visits give more children and families the opportunity to experience a safe, welcoming environment while helping community partners connect those they serve with new opportunities.

Program FAQ
Thanks to generous sponsors, donors and volunteers, Refuge Ranch programs are offered free of charge. Participants simply need to want to be here, be willing to participate and come with an open heart.
Contact Refuge Ranch through the website or by phone. A member of the team will follow up to learn more about your child and discuss appropriate next steps. A waiting list is maintained and children with the greatest need are prioritized.
No. Parents or legal guardians are asked to remain at the Ranch while their child participates. Family involvement is an important part of the Refuge Ranch approach, and having a parent or guardian nearby can provide encouragement and support.
Refuge Ranch primarily serves children and teens, including those who have experienced trauma, instability, mental health challenges, disabilities or other difficult life circumstances. Some programs and opportunities also serve adults and families. Contact the Ranch if you would like to discuss whether a program may be a good fit.
Yes. Visits are available by appointment, and there are also opportunities to experience the Ranch through events, volunteering and community programs throughout the year. Visit the Tour Refuge page or contact us to schedule a visit.
Hours and program schedules vary. Please contact the Ranch for current availability before visiting.
No. Refuge Ranch is a day-use facility. Participants visit for programs and activities but do not live at the Ranch.
Overnight accommodations are not currently available on Ranch property. Groups interested in volunteer projects or short-term service opportunities are encouraged to contact Refuge Ranch for nearby lodging and camping options.
Yes. Refuge Ranch is a Christ-centered ministry, and faith is at the heart of the mission. Participants are welcomed from all backgrounds and are never required to participate in religious activities. The goal is to serve every child and family with compassion while demonstrating the love and hope of Jesus through relationships and action.
